Dr. Segal has consistently distinguished himself as an outstanding clinician in every area that he has practiced and is widely recognized as a clinical leader in the field of mental healthcare. Dr. Segal believes in the integration of psychotherapy, mindfulness interventions, exercise, creative endeavors, as well as the thoughtful and judicious use of medications when clinically indicated in the treatment of children, adolescents, and adults. He has extensive training in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), family therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), as well as psychodynamic psychotherapy and always aims to personalize the treatment plan to the needs of each individual patient and their unique life circumstance. Dr. Segal has developed a ten pillar curriculum that draws on the most current evidence based treatments in child and adolescent psychiatry and frequently utilizes elements of this when working with children and teenagers in his office practice.
Dr. Segal most recently served as the Medical Director for MSA, the Child and Adolescent Center, where he led and directed extensive outpatient and acute clinical services. Additionally, he served as the Medical Director for the Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program and Intensive Outpatient Services at the Adventist Behavioral Health and Wellness Center in Rockville, MD. Prior to this, Dr. Segal held the post of Medical Director for the Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program and Intensive Outpatient Services at NorthShore University HealthSystem in the Chicago area. Dr. Segal has held academic posts as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and has recently held a major academic post at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. He attended medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and completed his psychiatric residency training at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, which is one of the top rated psychiatry programs in the country for psychotherapy training. Dr. Segal then went on to complete his child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship training at Lurie Chicago Children’s Hospital in conjunction with the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He is board certified in both general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. Dr. Segal has proudly been the recipient of numerous clinical service and teaching awards throughout his career.
Additionally, Dr. Segal has a significant interest in the visual arts, music, and sports. As a teenager, Dr. Segal was a competitive athlete playing both tennis and baseball at a high level. In his early 20s, he was the lead vocalist for a number of alternative bands and toured the United States extensively prior to beginning his training in medicine and psychiatry. Most recently, Dr. Segal has curated major contemporary art exhibitions in both New York and Los Angeles.
